The short answer: buy the tube that matches the tire size printed on your sidewall — not the rim, not a measurement, the molded size. Tubes are elastic and each one is made to fill a range of tires, which is why so many are labeled with two sizes at once. Match the sidewall, check the valve stem type, done.
That’s genuinely the whole method. The rest of this guide is why it works, what those slash-separated combo sizes mean, and the two valve-stem details that catch people.
How tube sizing actually works
A tire is a precision part — its bead has to land on one exact rim diameter. A tube is not. It’s a rubber balloon whose only job is to inflate until the tire stops it, so it doesn’t need an exact size, just a compatible range. Slightly small stretches to fit; that’s by design. This is why the tube wall of any shop looks short next to the tire wall: one tube covers what several tires need.
The practical rule that falls out: the tube is bought for the tire, not the wheel. Your rim diameter matters (a -8 tube for a -8 tire), but the tire size on the sidewall is the complete answer. If the sidewall says 4.80-8, you buy the tube whose label covers 4.80-8 — even if that label lists another size too. Which brings us to the slashes.

Read the slash as “or.” A 550/600-16 tube stretches to serve a 5.50-16 or a 6.00-16 equally well, because those tires are close cousins in diameter on the same 16″ rim. So when your sidewall says 6.00-16 and the box says 550/600-16, that’s not a compromise — that’s the correct part. Valve stems: TR-13, TR-15, and the bent ones
The second thing on the label is the valve spec, and it’s about fitting your wheel, not your tire. TR-13 is the default on small-equipment tubes — a short, straight rubber stem with the same threads and core as a car tire, so your gauge and compressor chuck already fit. TR-15 shows up on larger ag sizes: same idea, thicker stem for a larger rim hole. A TR-13 will flop loose in a hole sized for a TR-15, so if your old stem looked notably fat, check before ordering.
Then there are bent metal stems. Some wheels — snowblowers are notorious, plus certain tractor fronts with deep-dished or obstructed centers — give you no straight shot at the valve. A bent stem angles the valve out where a chuck can reach it. The buying cue is simple: look at the stem you’re replacing. Straight rubber, buy straight rubber. Angled metal, buy the bent-stem version of the same tube size, or you’ll be doing knuckle yoga every time you air up.
The three mistakes we see at the counter
These are the same three mix-ups that send folks back to our tube shelf for an exchange.
Buying by rim instead of tire. “It’s an 8-inch wheel” narrows it down, but a hand-truck 4.00-8 and a ZTR front on the same rim need very different amounts of rubber. The sidewall size is the answer; the rim alone isn’t.
Buying way oversize “to be safe.” A slightly small tube stretches into place — that’s its design. A too-big tube has to fold to fit, and every crease is a future chafe-through. When your size sits inside a combo range, take the combo; don’t jump past it.
Buying a tube for a tire that’s done. A tube fixes rim problems — rusty bead seats, mostly — not tire problems. If the sidewall’s cracked through, the tube just hides the failure until it matters.
