The short answer: a mower tire that keeps going flat is leaking from one of five places — the valve core, the bead seat, a puncture, dry-rotted sidewall, or a damaged rim — and you check them in exactly that order, cheapest first. A spray bottle of soapy water finds all five. Most of the flats that come through my door turn out to be the first two, and both are nearly free to fix.
The tool: a spray bottle and dish soap
Before the ladder, the instrument. Mix a squirt of dish soap into a spray bottle of water, air the tire up, and wet down the whole thing — valve, bead line on both sides, tread, sidewalls. A leak blows bubbles. A slow leak blows a slow, patient foam you might need a minute of watching to catch. This one dollar of equipment replaces all guessing, and every step below is just “where to point it and what the bubbles mean.”
The ladder, rung by rung
- Valve core. Spray straight into the open valve stem (cap off). Bubbles rising out of the stem mean the core — the little spring-loaded insert — is leaking. It unscrews with a fifty-cent tool and a new core costs about as much. Also try simply snugging it first; half of these are just loose. This is the most common flat I see and people replace whole tires over it.
- Bead seat. Spray along the line where tire meets rim, both sides. A creeping foam line means the bead isn’t sealing — on older machines that’s almost always rust pitting on the rim’s bead seat. Nothing’s “wrong” with the tire; the steel under it went crusty. This is the classic soft-every-weekend, no-hole-anywhere leak.
- Puncture. Spray the tread and watch for a spot that foams. Mowers pick up screws, nails, and thorn stubs constantly — the object often stays in the hole and plugs its own leak partway, which is why the tire holds for three days instead of three hours. Found metal? Leave it in until you’re ready to fix the tire; it’s marking the spot and slowing the leak.
- Dry-rot sidewall. If fine foam appears from the sidewall cracks themselves, the rubber has weather-checked deep enough to seep. Flex the sidewall by hand: shallow surface crazing is cosmetic, but cracks that open up when flexed — or any visible cord — mean the structure is going.
- Rim damage. Last and rarest: a bent rim lip from a curb strike, or a rusted-through weld, breaks the seal no tire can make. Bubbles trace to a spot on the rim itself rather than the rubber. Minor lip dings can sometimes be dressed flat; rust-through means wheel shopping.
When the answer is a tube
Rungs two and five — rusty bead seats and marginal rims — are tube territory. A tube holds the air itself, so the corroded seat that tubeless can’t seal against stops mattering. It’s the standard fix for old garden-tractor wheels and it lasts for years: wire-brush the loose rust, dust the inside with talc if you have it, seat the tube without pinching it, done. Small punctures also do fine with a tube when a plug won’t hold in a small tire’s thin tread. When the answer is a new tire
I’ll sell you a tube any day it’s the honest fix, but rung four isn’t one of those days. A sidewall cracked through is a structural failure — a tube inside it just pressurizes a tire that’s quitting, and it’ll finish quitting under load. Same verdict for cords showing, chunks of tread letting go, or a puncture in the sidewall rather than the tread (sidewalls flex too much for any plug or patch to live there). At that point you’re not fixing a leak, you’re rebuilding confidence in the corner of a machine you ride on a slope.
