Zero-turn tire sizes explained: fronts, rears, and why you don’t mix them

Fronts and rears on a zero-turn are two different tire families, sized differently on purpose. Here’s the chart mapped to what we stock, and why swapping sizes between positions — or side to side — fights the hydraulic drive.

The short answer: a zero-turn runs two different tire families — small front casters that just pivot, and large rear drive tires that carry the weight and do the pushing. Common rears run 18×8.50-8 up to 24×12.00-12; fronts are a much smaller wheel entirely. Don’t swap tires between positions, and don’t mismatch left-to-right on the rears — both fight the machine’s hydraulic drive, not just the tread.

If you’re staring at a worn tire trying to figure out what to order, here’s the whole system in four minutes — the two size families, the chart mapped to what we actually stock, and why “just put whatever fits” is bad advice on a zero-turn specifically.

Two tire families, one machine

A zero-turn’s front tires are casters — small, usually smooth or lightly ribbed, and free-spinning in every direction so the machine can pivot in place. They carry almost no drive load; their whole job is rolling along wherever the rear end points them. Common caster sizes run in the 11–13″ diameter range, on 5- or 6-inch rims — sizes like 11×4.00-5 and 13×5.00-6 show up across most residential and commercial brands. We stock the 13×5.00-6 (Deestone D265 turf); the smaller 11×4.00-5 isn’t something we carry — a mower dealer or the machine’s parts catalog is the right stop for that one, and this guide is still useful for confirming what you’re looking at.

The rear tires are the drive tires — bigger, wider, higher-ply, and each one bolted directly to its own hydraulic wheel motor. They carry the machine’s weight, put the power down, and steer it by spinning at different speeds or directions relative to each other. That’s the whole trick behind “zero radius”: two independent wheel motors, one per rear tire, spinning at whatever speed and direction the lap bars ask for. Turn the machine in place and one rear tire spins forward while the other holds still or reverses; drive straight and both spin the same speed together. The rears do the work, the fronts just follow. It’s also why rear tire size is not a place to improvise — more on that below.

Because both wheel motors are engineered around a specific tire diameter, everything about how well a zero-turn drives — ground speed, steering response, how evenly it tracks straight — assumes the rear tires are the size the machine shipped with. That’s the piece that gets lost in “it’s just a tire.”

The pattern to notice: as the deck gets bigger and heavier, the rear tire gets wider and the rim steps up from 8″ to 12″. Within a given size, most of these come in more than one ply rating — a lighter turf ply for a lawn that mows flat, and a heavier one for hills or high hours. That trade-off is its own conversation, and the zero-turn tire page shows the full stocked lineup with both. Why you don’t mix sizes on a zero-turn

The short version: a rear tire’s overall diameter sets how far the machine travels per wheel rotation, and each rear wheel motor is engineered around the diameter it’s supposed to be turning. Put a front-size tire on a rear hub and the wheel motor spins faster to cover the same ground — that extra strain generates heat the drive system wasn’t built to shed, and it can shorten the life of the hydraulic transmission. Put a rear-size tire on the front and the oversized caster fights every pivot, making the machine steer heavy and tear turf on tight turns.

The same logic applies side-to-side on the rears, and it’s the more common mistake: replacing one worn rear tire with a different size or a different amount of wear than its partner. Two rear tires of different diameters cover different ground per rotation, so the machine pulls toward the smaller one — and the wheel motor on the side doing more of the work runs harder to compensate. It’s a small mismatch, but the fix is trivial: replace rears in pairs, and keep both sides at the same pressure. A tire wearing your machine sideways isn’t a bad memory of a pothole — it’s often just an inch of diameter difference between the rears.

Reading a rear size like 23×10.50-12

Zero-turn rears use the three-number mower format: overall diameter (how tall the mounted tire stands, in inches), section width (how wide across the tread), and rim diameter (the wheel it mounts on). So 23×10.50-12 reads: 23 inches tall, 10.5 inches wide, on a 12-inch rim. All three numbers matter for fitment — get the rim diameter wrong and the tire won’t seat; get the overall diameter meaningfully wrong and you’ve thrown off ground speed and deck level, the same problem as mixing front and rear. No. Zero-turn front tires are small, free-spinning casters — commonly around 11 to 13 inches in diameter on 5- or 6-inch rims — while rear tires are much larger drive tires, typically 18 to 24 inches in diameter on 8-, 10-, or 12-inch rims. The rears carry the machine’s weight and power the wheel motors; the fronts just pivot.
