The short answer: there’s no single right number, and that’s not a forum making things up — the manuals genuinely disagree. Across the ones we could verify, rear (drive) tires run anywhere from 10 to 18 psi and front (caster) tires either skip air entirely or want to run near their max. The differences track the machine, not the maker’s guesswork: heavier commercial decks and higher-volume tires call for different pressure than a light homeowner unit. Check your own decal or manual first — it wins over anything below.
Search “zero turn tire pressure” and you’ll get five different numbers from five different sites, none of them sourced. So we went and pulled the actual manuals. Here’s what they say, who said it, and why a chart that looks inconsistent is actually internally consistent once you know why.
The OEM chart, reconciled to primary sources
Every zero-turn maker prints a different number, and none of them are wrong — they’re just different machines. This is every PSI figure we could pull directly from a manufacturer’s own operator’s manual or support documentation, not a secondhand summary:

Notice what’s missing: John Deere. Plenty of pages online will hand you a Deere number, but we couldn’t pull one straight from a Deere manual ourselves for this chart, so it’s not going in a table we’re calling reconciled. If you run a Deere ZTR, your decal or manual is the source — we’re not going to guess on your behalf.
Why the numbers don’t match — and why that’s fine
The spread above isn’t sloppiness, it’s two different jobs wearing the same word, “tire.” A front caster tire on a zero-turn carries almost no weight — it just swivels and follows. Some makers (Exmark) skip air entirely and seal it semi-pneumatic; others (Toro) run it high, close to the sidewall max, because a firm caster holds its bead and shape without any load pushing back. Neither is wrong; they’re solving “keep this tire round” two different ways.
A rear drive tire is the one actually carrying the deck, the engine, and you, which is why its number moves more with the machine than the front does. Ferris’s commercial-class IS2500Z posts the highest rear number in the chart (18 psi) because it’s a heavier frame; Cub Cadet’s homeowner-class CC 30 posts the lowest (≈10 psi) because it’s a lighter one. Tire volume plays a part too — a big rear like a stocked 24x12.00-12 holds noticeably more air than an 18x8.50-8, and a bigger air volume needs less pressure to support the same weight. Husqvarna’s flat 15 psi across the board is really just a design choice to skip that whole conversation.
No manual, no decal? Here’s the honest default
When you truly can’t find a number, air the rears toward the middle of the verified range and leave the fronts high. That’s not a made-up universal PSI — it’s what the chart above actually shows: four of the five rear numbers we verified land between 10 and 15 psi, with Ferris’s heavier commercial deck as the outlier at 18. So a reasonable rear starting point, absent any other information, is around 12 psi, checked against whatever number is molded on the sidewall as the hard ceiling. Fronts either take no air (check for a semi-pneumatic or foam-filled caster before you reach for a gauge) or want to sit close to that sidewall max, since they’re barely loaded either way.
Then let the tire correct you. Run two mowing sessions, look at the wear, and adjust — the tread will tell you faster than any chart, ours included.
How low rear pressure turns into a scalped stripe
A soft rear tire drops that corner of the deck, and the deck scalps the first high spot it meets. A zero-turn deck floats at a fixed height off four tire-supported corners. Drop the air in one rear tire and that corner of the machine sits lower than the other three — the deck tilts, even if you can’t see it standing next to the machine. Drive that tilted deck over a crown or a frost heave and the low corner’s blade tip is the one that digs in and scalps, while the rest of the cut looks fine. Toro’s own manuals put it plainly: uneven tire pressure causes an uneven cut. Before you touch deck height or blade pitch on a scalping machine, check that all four corners hold the same pressure — it’s the cheapest diagnostic on the machine and it’s wrong more often than people expect.
Checking it right
Check cold, and never confuse the sidewall number with your target. Air expands when it warms, so a pressure read right after mowing reads high and lies to you — check first thing, before the machine has worked. And the number molded into the rubber near the bead is a maximum, not a recommendation; every manual in the chart above stays at or under it — Toro even writes its front spec as “206 kPa (30 psi) or the pressure indicated on the sidewall, whichever is lower,” which tells you exactly how they think about that ceiling.
