OWNER NOTES

What we see with the C-160 around Cleveland.

The C-160 is the 16-HP, 8-speed gear-drive in the C-series Wheel Horse line — built from 1974 to 1977 and one of the most common Wheel Horses still being mowed with today. Stock fitment is 16x6.50-8 fronts and 23x8.50-12 rears. The front size is the same one the John Deere 318 and the late IH-era Cub Cadets run, which makes cross-make front-tire shopping practical for owners running more than one antique garden tractor.

What we hear from C-160 owners:

  • The original Carlisle turf pattern was factory equipment on most C-series Wheel Horses. We don't carry Carlisle — restorers chasing the original look run the same classic turf pattern in a modern Kenda or Deestone 23x8.50-12, and working machines save a few dollars the same way.
  • The C-160 ran 1974–1977, squarely in the AMC-ownership era of Wheel Horse — AMC bought the company in 1974, and Toro didn't pick it up until 1986. Parts conversations on a C-160 sometimes pivot on which year the tractor came out of, even though the tire fitment didn't change across the run.
  • The same 16x6.50-8 / 23x8.50-12 cluster covers most of the C-series — C-120, C-161, C-165 and the rest of the 8-speed family share it. If you have more than one Wheel Horse in this line, one tire order can usually cover both.

FOR PERIOD-CORRECT RESTORATION

Carlisle was original equipment on most C-series Wheel Horses. We don’t carry Carlisle — the Kenda K500 Super Turf in the stock 23x8.50-12 wears the same classic turf family and is the closest match on our shelf for show machines and original-paint restorations.

FOR WORKING C-160s

For a C-160 still actively mowing, a modern Kenda or Deestone 4-ply turf in the same 23x8.50-12 stock size is the practical replacement — comparable wear on residential mowing, no nostalgia premium.

FOR THE C-SERIES SIBLINGS

The same 16x6.50-8 front / 23x8.50-12 rear cluster covers most of the 8-speed C-series — C-120, C-161, C-165 and the rest. If you maintain more than one Wheel Horse in this line, a single tire order usually covers the fleet without size hunting.
